It's a meme. Everybody's doing it.

I'm glad Al Gore hadn't invented webcomics yet in 1995. You would not like to see the travesties I would have thrust upon you in those days. Or blogging, for that matter. Nobody wants to hear me whine about my crummy art teacher or being the only grade 12 student who went on the band trip to Disneyland.
No doubt in another 13 years I will hate everything I am writing today. Oh the horror! |

I have edited this meme in order to keep my journal more PG-ish. You can get the whole thing from winzig if you like.
Also, the whole thing is under a cut. ( Cut! ) |

I didn't add any new pages to my site this week but I did add a couple of links.
As promised, however, here are the results of the meme from a few days ago! ( under the cut ) |

| Cool creative character meme |
[Feb. 7th, 2008|08:37 pm] |
A meme I got from spikecomix. I don't know if I actually have enough readers to do this successfully, but we'll try and see. As added incentive, I will draw the results and post them on Sunday! I prob'ly won't have a LODAL update for you, so this might be the only art you get out of me this week!
The rules: 1) I make a numbered list of 10 characters, but keep it a secret. 2) You, my friends and readers, ask questions about what you'd like to know about them.
IE: "If 3 and 4 were trapped in a cave together with only a blanket and a toothpick, what would they do?" (The more random the better!)
3) I post the answers and who was who on the list.
I may even reveal spoilers if you ask the right question about the right person. Characters could be chosen from any comic on my site, including characters you haven't seen from comics you have, but probably not including old comics that no longer interest me. In short, they could be anyone! |

I'd like to take this opportunity to introduce my break-out album. It's a bhangra pop album straight from the streets of Calcutta. Bollywood love song samples meet Bengali hip-hop beats! It's gonna be hot!

Actually this is just a meme I got from quirkybird. The rules are as follows:
1. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random The first article title on the page is the name of your band.
2. http://www.quotationspage.com/random.php3 The last four words of the very last quote is the title of your album.
3. http://www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/7days The third picture, no matter what it is, will be your album cover.
Then you make the album cover and post it somewhere. (I cheated a bit by including more than four words of quote, but it worked out perfectly otherwise!) |

| Really, my life is more boring than it sounds. |

Eight Things You (Probably) Didn't Know About Me
ttallan did one of these a week ago and I meant to continue the meme but didn't get around to it until now.
1.) I have two bachelors' degrees. One in fine arts, one in education. Plus a year studying illustration. Altogether I've spent eight years in post-secondary programs. I could have been a doctor by now.
2.) My first webcomic was online, albeit briefly, in 1998. I was drawing a fairly nerdy comic making fun of Star Wars and Star Trek for the university newspaper and thought "hey, I could put this on the internet!" I put a few strips up but then got bored. The site has long since vanished. The comic was called "Star Glek."

3.) I've been in a rather large earthquake. It was 1999 and I was living in Taiwan. At the epicentre the quake was at six point something on the Richter scale. I wasn't at the epicentre, but buildings shook, bottles broke, walls had cracks in them, and the week's worth of constant aftershocks left my nerves pretty frazzled. I had to keep a glass of water sitting nearby on a table or shelf at all times so that when I felt the earth move I could look and see if the room was actually shaking or whether it was just me. Have you ever heard the sound of the world vibrating? I have.
4.) The Xiuhcoatl character from Lords of Death and Life has gone through many changes and re-writes. He originally began as a character my brother and I made up when we were playing with Lego as kids. He was a blue energy Mayan superhero living in space!
5.) I'm working on a brand new online comic with a friend- we're both writing it and he's going to draw it (because really, I have too many comics to draw already). It is a slice-of-life comic about teaching English overseas.
6.) My current user pic was drawn by a six-year-old.
7.) When I draw comics I often stick the page to the fridge with magnets so I can draw standing up. It makes me feel like a "real" artist.
8.) I met Scott McCloud at a signing for his latest book last summer. When I told him my name he knew who I was! |

| An informative comparative chart: |
[Jan. 4th, 2008|09:08 pm] |
I stole this from Winzig and I am totally turning it into a meme! She compared her character Pepsi von Hellswine to Hagar the Horrible. I'm doing Dr. Manhattan and Mol. If you have a comic, you must perpetuate the meme by picking a well-known comics character who is really amazingly similar* to your character and compare them on 10-12 points of interest like so. Do it! Do it now! Dr. Manhattan | Mol Kupul | Has transformed into an all-powerful blue god
| Can transform into a flaming blue Aztec spirit | | Often walks around completely naked | Often walks around in nothing but a loincloth and sandals
| | Has the power to bring the world to an end | Believes the world will end in the year 2012 | | No discernible sense of humour | No discernible sense of humour | | A brilliant nuclear physicist | Illiterate | | Has a girlfriend named Laurie Juspeczyk | Has a wife named Four-Deer | | Single-handedly won the Vietnam War for the Americans | Trying to avert a war between Mayans and Aztecs | | Knows what will happen in the future | Knows how to grow corn | | The Soviet Union's worst nightmare | Has nightmares about frog-iguanas | | Has a friend named Rorschach who is a psychopath | Has a friend named Janaab-Pakal who fancies his wife | | Built a palace on Mars using the power of his mind | Also knows how to grow beans and squash | *-Hint: sarcasm. |

| Year in re-view |
[Dec. 8th, 2007|11:31 pm] |
I am becoming a huge sucker for memes. Sorry. "Take the first line from the first post of every month of the year. Repost it here as your year in review." Those are the rules, but I tried it and most of my posts were boring announcements of comics updates. So instead I'm going to pick the most interesting post from each month and make my life sound really interesting and fulfilled!
J: GUESS WHO JUST GOT NOMINATED FOR A WEBCARTOONISTS' CHOICE AWARD!!!!!!!
F: I took the job. Everyone is estimating that it will only last until the beginning of March, but this is only an estimate.
M: I'm in a bit of a bind, here. I'm trying to put together book two of A Mad Tea-Party so I can take it to the printer this week.
A: Wait, what's this? Is it? Could it be? A comic featuring the ongoing adventures of Martian drama queen Maida Kilwa???
M: I'm behind schedule and completely exhausted.
J: One thing comics conventions are guaranteed to do is make me feel philosophical about my place in comicdom.
J: It's been a few years since my last rejection letter.
A: Okay. Remember that comic I submitted to that anthology?
S: If you've never read the Popol Vuh, I highly recommend it.
O: No Mol this week. He'll be back next week. Today you get a two-page story that will be my contribution to an as-yet unnamed Vancouver-based anthology.
N: I locked my last anti-Tria rant but I'm not locking this one.
D: 1.) The other day I did an interview on a new webcomics podcast.
Boy, that sure SOUNDS exciting, doesn't it? I'm not sure it actually was. For the record I didn't get the WCCA, the job (teaching grade 4) did only last until March, I bought a laser printer to print A Mad Tea-Party, Maida Kilwa is back on the back burner, I did keep up with my schedule and have Cloud-Leapers rejected but later re-submitted and accepted, the Popol Vuh is still awesome, the Vancouver anthology will be named "Robots, Pine Trees and Broken Hearts," and Trias still suck. This is my life in 2007. *bows* |
